LA Kings Activate Matt Greene; Jake Muzzin To Manchester, Erik Ersberg Leaves Organization

EL SEGUNDO, CA — On October 23, the Los Angeles Kings activated defenseman Matt Greene from the non-roster list and he is expected to return to the lineup tonight at Colorado (6:00 PM PDT).

It was also learned that goaltender Erik Ersberg cleared waivers and has left the organization.

To make room on the roster for Greene, rookie defenseman Jake Muzzin was assigned to the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, the Kings’ primary minor league affiliate.

Greene, 27, underwent shoulder surgery back in July, and missed training camp. The 6-3, 231-pound native of Grand Ledge, Michigan has scored five goals and has added 31 assists for 36 points with 399 penalty minutes in three seasons with the Kings.

Muzzin, 21, made the Kings’ lineup out of training camp and has played in six games, contributing one assist. The 6-3, 213-pound native of Woodstock, Ontario was signed by the Kings as an unrestricted free agent on January 4, 2010.

Ersberg failed to make the Kings’ roster this season, as the Kings knew they had to make room for goaltender Jonathan Bernier this season. That left Ersberg as the odd man out, a bruised hand suffered in training camp notwithstanding, and he was assigned to the Monarchs, where he played in two games.

After clearing waivers, the Kings terminated Ersberg’s contract, which will allow him to sign a contract elsewhere, and he is expected to sign with a team in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

In three seasons with the Kings, Ersberg has played in 53 games (2,827 minutes), earning a 2.55 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage and two shutouts.

Ersberg fell way out of favor with Kings head coach Terry Murray last season, for reasons that may never be known with any degree of certainty, and played in just eleven games.

  1. Just a little bit surprised they sent Muzzin out, when they could have put Doughty on IR retro to earlier in the week, but not surprised overall. Muzzin will be back…

  2. Muzzin is going to do well in Manchester, and hopefully he will get a shot with the Kings very soon. I wish the best of luck to Ersberg in the KHL.

  3. I bet they let Doughty sit till the Devils game. No need to risk anything, I don’t think it was too serious because he was able to finish the period.
