EL SEGUNDO, CA — Patrik Bartosak stopped 25 shots, and Nick Shore scored the game-winning goal at 7:58 of the second period to lead the Los Angeles Kings rookies to a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks rookies at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, California on September 9.
With the win, the Kings rookies swept the two-game rookie tournament, having won on September 8 in Anaheim 6-1.
Despite being outplayed throughout most of the first period, defenseman Alex Roach opened the scoring with a power play off a blast from left point with traffic in front of Ducks goalie John Gibson, giving the Kings a 1-0 lead at the 18:45 mark.
Jordan Weal gave the Kings a 2-0 lead at 3:08 of the second period, banking the puck off of Gibson from behind the left goal post.
Shore followed just 4:50 later, taking a pass in the right circle and wristing the puck between Gibson’s legs to give the Kings a 3-0 lead.
Chris Wagner got the Ducks on the board less than two minutes later when he threw the puck in front from the right wing boards. The puck was deflected in front by Kings defenseman Nick Ebert, beating Bartosak at the 9:03 mark.
Steven Whitney cut the Kings’ lead to 3-2 at 16:04 of the third period, taking advantage of a turnover by the Kings just inside their blue line.
Bartosak put in a very strong performance, keeping the Ducks off the scoreboard, despite several defensive breakdowns by the Kings that gave the Ducks some glorious scoring chances off of some two-on-on breaks.
Camp invitee Mathias Niederberger started the third period for the Kings, making eleven saves.
Gibson did not have a great night, making just nine saves. Igor Bobkov played in the third period for the Ducks, stopping all ten shots he faced.
