Anze Kopitar scored the shootout game-winner, capping a comeback that saw the Los Angeles Kings come all the way back from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Anaheim Ducks, 5-4, at Honda Center on April 6.
The Kings got off to another one of their patented lethargic starts, giving up two first-period goals and another in the second period before the Kings woke up from their deep slumber.
Dustin Brown scored at 9:46 of the second period, only to see Ducks forward Bobby Ryan score an easy goal off a turnover by Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick and defenseman Randy Jones behind the Kings’ net.
Quick was replaced by Erik Ersberg shortly after Ryan’s goal and looked a bit rusty on a slapshot by Ducks winger Teemu Selanne, who beat Ersberg between his skates at 12:19.
The Ducks then went into prevent mode, focusing on defense. That gave the Kings the opportunity they needed and they capitalized.
The Kings got goals from Alexander Frolov at 16:41 of the second period, Justin Williams at 7:56 of the third period and Michal Handzus at the 18:51 mark.
Both teams got a couple of quality scoring opportunities in the overtime period, before going into the shootout.
