LA Kings: Simmonds’ Surgery Successful; Elkins Called Up From Manchester

EL SEGUNDO, CA — On December 14, the Los Angeles Kings announced that right wing Wayne Simmonds underwent successful arthroscopic surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee and that they have recalled forward Corey Elkins (under emergency conditions) from the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, their primary minor league affiliate.

Simmonds’ injury was discovered on December 11. He was seen on crutches at Staples Center following the Kings’ 3-2 shootout victory over the Dallas Stars on December 12. The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Kvitne at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. He is listed as week-to-week and will be evaluated next week, after which a time frame for his return will be determined.

Elkins, 24, is currently the Monarchs’ co-leader with nineteen points and eight goals.  He also shares the team lead with three power play goals. Elkins’ 19 points is also tied for eighth in the AHL among rookies, while his eight goals are tied for fifth among AHL freshman.


The 6-3, 216-pound native of West Bloomfield, Michigan spent the previous four years at Ohio State University. Last season, his senior year, Elkins eighteen goals and added 23 assists for 41 points in 42 games.  His 41 points and 18 goals led Ohio State and his +24 plus/minus rating co-led the team.

Elkins, who is expected to join the Kings in Edmonton on December 15, was signed by the Kings as an unrestricted free agent on March 31, 2009. He will wear jersey number 47.
