EL SEGUNDO, CA — Heading into action on November 18, 2011, the Los Angeles Kings find themselves on top of the Pacific Division, and in third place in the Western Conference.

Although things are not all coming up roses for the Kings, who continue to struggle offensively in five-on-five situations, and have dropped to 17th in the National Hockey League on the penalty-kill, they have won four out of their last five games, and have earned points in five out of their last seven. More Than Just A Banana Peel Was Hurled At Philadelphia Flyers Forward Wayne Simmonds

LOS ANGELES — With National Hockey League training camps having started this week, this is a time when North American hockey fans in particular should be celebrating the fact that the 2011-12 NHL season is just two weeks away.

We should also be celebrating the extraordinary career of one of the all-time greats, center Mike Modano, who will officially announce his retirement at a press conference later today.

NHL fans could also be celebrating new interpretations of rules governing hits from behind and contact with the head, along with pioneering efforts by NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan, to educate players, coaches, general managers, and fans alike through the use of video to explain his decisions in supplementary discipline cases, such as in the recent hitting from behind incident involving Calgary Flames forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, and a separate incident involving Philadelphia Flyers forward Jody Shelley. EL SEGUNDO, CA — One of the most talked about aspects of the 2010-11 season was the fact that the Western Conference playoff race was so tight from the first day of the season all the way to the last, as the eight playoff teams were not determined until the very end.

“The division, the conference was so competitive,” said Los Angeles Kings head coach Terry Murray. “It came right down to the last game of the year, whether Chicago gets in, or Dallas gets in. It was that competitive.” Read more of this post

EL SEGUNDO, CA — One of the newest members of the Los Angeles Kings, 26-year-old center Mike Richards, took some time out from home shopping here in the Los Angeles area to meet the local media, and to don his new team’s jersey for the first time.

Richards was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers, along with center prospect Rob Bordson, in exchange for right wing Wayne Simmonds, center prospect Brayden Schenn, and a second round pick in the 2012 draft. Read more of this post

LOS ANGELES — With the Stanley Cup Finals and the National Hockey League’s annual awards extravaganza behind us, at this time of year, attention turns to the annual NHL Entry Draft, which is often accompanied by a slew of draft day trades.

But this year, Los Angeles Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi decided not to wait until later today when the 2011 NHL Entry Draft begins in St. Paul, Minnesota.
