Frozen Royalty Audio and NHL Video: LA Kings Don’t Play Smart Against Ducks

LOS ANGELES — After two solid performances against Nashville and Vancouver, the Los Angeles Kings lost much of the mental edge they gained they displayed in those two games in a sloppy, 2-1 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks at Staples Center on April 3.

Jack Johnson scored on the power play at 19:40 of the first period, but that would be one of the few high-quality scoring chances by the Kings.

After a scoreless second period, Ducks forward Saku Koivu tied the game at 18:28 of the third period, with Ducks goalie Curtis McElhinny on the bench for the extra attacker.

The game went into a shootout, with the Kings shooters doing little to challenge McElhinny, who easily stopped Anze Kopitar, Johnson and Dustin Brown.

Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick put in a strong performance and in the shootout, he stopped Ducks forwards Teemu Selanne and Corey Perry, only to be beaten by Koivu in the third round, giving the Ducks the victory.

In many games over the past six weeks, effort, intensity and urgency were the biggest problems for the Kings. This time, they simply did not play a smart game. Read more of this post

Frozen Royalty Audio and NHL Video: LA Kings Still Need Work Despite Win Over Islanders

LOS ANGELES — After an embarrassingly poor, lethargic effort in a 3-0 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on March 18, the Los Angeles Kings showed some improvement in a 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders in front of an announced sell-out crowd of 18,118 at Staples Center on March 20.

Brad Richardson scored his eleventh goal of the season at 13:35 of the first period and the Kings, behind a bounce-back performance by goaltender Jonathan Quick, made the lone goal stand up.

Quick stopped 26 shots in his fourth shutout of the season and the eighth of his National Hockey League career.

The Kings got off to a strong start, which has been rare for them in recent games. But when Kings defenseman Randy Jones went off for tripping at 15:39 of the second period, the Islanders got some much-needed energy despite not scoring on the ensuing power play and took over control of the game, while the Kings’ effort sagged. Frozen Royalty Audio And NHL Video: LA Kings Fall Flat Against St. Louis

LOS ANGELES — After putting in a tremendous effort only to see the Detroit Red Wings pull out a 2-1 win on January 7, the Los Angeles Kings went in the opposite direction against the St. Louis Blues on January 9 at Staples Center.

Indeed, this time, the Kings put in a woeful effort in which they rarely got to loose pucks or won physical battles in the corners and along the boards in a 4-3 loss. Read more of this post

LA Kings Recall Alec Martinez, Place Randy Jones On Injured Reserve

EL SEGUNDO, CA — On January 6, the Los Angeles Kings recalled defenseman Alec Martinez from the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, their primary minor league affiliate, and they placed defenseman Randy Jones on the injured reserve list, retroactive to December 16.
