Los Angeles Kings Let It All Skate Away Against San Jose

LOS ANGELES — Four days after the Los Angeles Kings were eliminated in six games from the first round of 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs by the San Jose Sharks, the Kings dressing room at Staples Center has probably been cleaned out, not to be used (at least, not by the Kings), until next season.

Despite losing in six games, the Kings came close to, not just extending the series to a seventh game, but to advancing to the second round. Indeed, when they were on top of their game, their forecheck, defensive zone coverage and goaltending gave the Sharks fits.

“We had opportunities to win this series,” Kings right wing and team captain Dustin Brown lamented. “We had a 4-0 lead at home in Game 3, and two other overtime games. We were right there.” Read more of this post

EL SEGUNDO, CA — With less than 16 hours left, at the time of this writing, before the Los Angeles Kings open their first round playoff series against the San Jose Sharks at HP Pavilion in San Jose (7:00 PM PDT, televised in Southern California on Fox Sports West, nationally on Versus, and in Canada on TSN and RDS), one thing is clear…

…without star center Anze Kopitar, it will take a miracle for the Kings to win this series and advance to the second round. Read more of this post

LOS ANGELES — With the Pacific Division-leading San Jose Sharks in town, the Los Angeles Kings were looking to cut into the Sharks six-point lead over them in the division standings.

Although the Kings won the game, 4-3, they gift-wrapped a point in the standings for the Sharks by giving up the tying goal at the 19.55 mark of the third period, when Sharks forward Patrick Marleau scored his second goal of the game.

To magnify the fact that the Kings blew an opportunity to draw even closer to the Sharks, Kings right wing and team captain Dustin Brown scored his second goal of the game just 1:37 earlier, giving the Kings a 3-2 lead, with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Read more of this post

Frozen Royalty Audio And NHL Video: LA Kings Fail To Show Up In Blowout Loss To Sharks

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Kings’ hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference is as shaky as ever after an embarrassing 5-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks in front of a sparse, announced crowd of 16,212 fans at a very quiet Staples Center on January 20.

LOS ANGELES — When San Jose Sharks superstar center Joe Thornton dropped the gloves with Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf just two seconds into Game 6 of their Western Conference quarterfinal playoff series, it was too little, too late.

Thornton, who scored just one goal and contributed four assists in the six-game series, failed to show any fight in his game until it was too late, helping lead his team down the drain, losing the series in six games.

The Sharks have a reputation of being playoff busts, failing to get out of the second round in four straight seasons. This is also a team that reached the Western Conference Finals in 2003-04 and has been among the elite teams in the conference since then. Read more of this post
