Dean Lombardi Says “It Ain’t Me.” But How Much Credit Does LA Kings GM Really Deserve For His Team’s Success?

COMMENTARY/ANALYSIS: Since the Los Angeles Kings won the 2014 Stanley Cup Championship, their second Stanley Cup win in three seasons, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi has received a great deal of praise for his work to build the Kings into a championship team and a perennial Stanley Cup contender. But he claims that he is not responsible for that success. Rather, it’s the players, head coach, and ownership who should get all the credit.

In this multi-part series, Frozen Royalty will take a close look at Lombardi’s role in the Kings’ success, how much of his vision has become reality, and how true his statement, “…it ain’t me” really is.

EL SEGUNDO, CA — With the Los Angeles Kings having won two Stanley Cup Championships in the last three seasons, it is easy to forget that it was not so long ago when the franchise was teetering on the edge of becoming totally irrelevant in Southern California.

On April 21, 2006, Kings Vice President, Communications and Broadcasting Mike Altieri opened a press conference at what was then the HealthSouth Training Center (now the Toyota Sports Center) in El Segundo, California by saying that the team was about to “…embark on a new era of Kings hockey in Los Angeles.”

Frozen Royalty Audio: LA Kings, Arizona Coyotes Split Shootouts In Split-Squad Pre-Season Games

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Kings and the Arizona Coyotes opened their 2014-15 pre-season schedule by splitting shootout victories in split-squad games at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona and at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

EL SEGUNDO, CA — With defenseman Drew Doughty still a no-show on the ice at the Los Angeles Kings 2014 training camp due to an upper body injury and with players and coaches refusing to comment on the status of Kyle Clifford (wrist), Jonathan Quick (wrist), and Jarret Stoll (hip), who are all recovering from off-season surgery, the story lines for Day 2 of the Kings training camp sounded a lot like they did for Day 1.

However, some new tidbits surfaced, including a commitment each player made before they all went their separate ways for the summer.

EL SEGUNDO, CA — Day 2 of the Los Angeles Kings 2014 training camp has come and gone with very similar story lines compared to Day 1 on September 19.

On both days, players touched on their goals for the season and about the chance they have to repeat as Stanley Cup Champions.

But on Day 2, Alec Martinez and Justin Williams talked about the hunger the Kings have to win it again this season. Another player, one who struggled mightily last season, center Mike Richards, is probably even hungrier, given that he is seeking redemption after a poor 2013-14 season.
