Manchester Monarchs RW Tyler Toffoli Is Showing Why He’s The LA Kings’ Top Forward Prospect

LOS ANGELES — A little over two years ago, right wing Tyler Toffoli sat with his family in the stands at Staples Center in Los Angeles, believing that he would be selected in the first round of the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

As it turned out, he was passed over by all thirty NHL teams on the first day of the draft, primarily because teams had concerns about his conditioning and his dedication to improving in that area.

“The knock on this kid was that he hadn’t started to take his conditioning as seriously as he could,” Los Angeles Kings Co-Director of Amateur Scouting Michael Futa said at the time.

Toffoli was selected in the second round (47th overall) of the 2010 draft by the Kings, who pushed the 6-0, 178-pound native of Scarborough, Ontario to improve his conditioning, along with the rest of his game. Read more of this post

Tyler Toffoli Improved His Two-Way Play In 2011-12 Without Sacrificing Offense

EL SEGUNDO, CA — Left wings Dwight King and Jordan Nolan surprised everyone late last season by not only staying with the big club after they were recalled from the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League in early February 2012, but also by playing a key role in the Los Angeles Kings making the playoffs, and winning the Stanley Cup just a little over two months ago.

With the two having “graduated” from the AHL, and with serious doubts that center Andrei Loktionov is capable of producing consistently at the National Hockey League level, primarily due to his lack of size and strength, one young player could very well be the Kings’ top forward prospect, even though he has not yet played at the professional level.

That player is none other than center/right wing Tyler Toffoli, who could be the forward prospect with greatest potential to make an impact at the NHL level for the Kings.

Last season, Toffoli, who was selected by the Kings in the second round (47th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, scored 52 goals and tallied 48 assists for 100 points, with a +31 plus/minus rating, and 22 penalty minutes in 65 regular season games with the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League. Despite Long Odds, LA Kings Prospects Jordan Weal And Tyler Toffoli Have Sights Set On The NHL For 2011-12

EL SEGUNDO, CA — With the Los Angeles Kings having acquired two, top-six forwards this summer in center Mike Richards and left wing Simon Gagne, their top two lines appear to be set for the 2011-12 season.

Add to that the fact that the Kings have role players up front who are returning, it is safe to presume that all available positions on their forward lines have been filled, which means that, barring unforeseen circumstances, it is more than likely that there no available roster spots for any of their up-and-coming forward prospects.

Despite the astronomical odds against making it onto the Kings’ opening night roster, two of their young prospects, centers Jordan Weal from the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League and Tyler Toffoli from the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League, have their sights set firmly on the National Hockey League for the 2011-12 season.
