EL SEGUNDO, CA — A few nights ago, people in the small Canadian city of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan shared reasons to celebrate with residents of the Ojibway (one of Canada’s First Nations) reserve in Garden River, Ontario.

On February 11, Meadow Lake’s Dwight King, and Garden River’s Jordan Nolan, each made their 2011-12 debut with the Los Angeles Kings—for Nolan, it was his National Hockey League debut as well—in a 2-1 overtime loss to the New York Islanders.

Although the loss may have tempered the celebratory mood, both King and Nolan gave the folks back home more reasons to celebrate less than 24 hours later, when they both scored their first NHL goals in a 4-2 victory over the Dallas Stars in Dallas. Read more of this post

Los Angeles Kings Need Early-Season Version Of Mike Richards To Return

LOS ANGELES AND EL SEGUNDO, CA — With an assist on Dustin Penner’s goal at 17:46 of the second period, giving the Los Angeles Kings their final margin of victory in a 3-1 win at Tampa Bay on Tuesday night, center Mike Richards ended an eight-game point scoring drought.

Richards’ performance in this game may have been his best since returning to the lineup after missing eight games due to a concussion that he suffered on December 1, 2011, when the Kings handed the visiting Florida Panthers a 2-1 defeat.

But since returning on December 22 (a 3-2 shootout win against the Anaheim Ducks at Staples Center in Los Angeles), Richards has been a mere shell of his former self. Read more of this post

PASADENA, CA — Author Brian Kennedy, a freelance hockey writer who covers the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks for Inside Hockey, will read from his new book, My Country Is Hockey (Edmonton, Argenta Press, 2011), at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, on Thursday, February 9, 2012, at 7:00 PM.

The book explores the deep roots of Canada’s hockey obsession, which has become an integral part of the national mythology. Among the topics Kennedy takes up are the violence in the game, French-English rivalries, the modern definition of childhood, and Canada’s relationship with its closest neighbor, the United States.
