LOS ANGELES — Although the pageantry is nothing compared to the annual Rose Parade each New Year’s Day in Pasadena, California, when the Los Angeles Kings win the Stanley Cup, as they did for the second time in franchise history on June 13, 2014, their celebratory parades are just as special, just in a different way.

An estimated 300,000 fans lined Figueroa Street and Chick Hearn Court in Downtown Los Angeles as Kings players, coaches, staff, and their families rode double-decker buses and one specially equipped semi-trailer truck south on Figueroa Street, starting at 5th Street, before turning west onto Chick Hearn Court, between Staples Center and L.A. Live.

LOS ANGELES — A couple of days have passed since the Los Angeles Kings celebrated their 2014 Stanley Cup Championship with their fans during a parade down Figueroa Street in Downtown Los Angeles, turning west onto Chick Hearn Court, between Staples Center and L.A. Live, followed by a rally inside Staples Center.

Now that the initial excitement has died down just a bit, a look back at the rally indicates that it was more than a celebration. To be sure, the Kings celebrated their victory and expressed their gratitude. But they also used the event to send a few messages as well.

After the Hall-of-Fame “Voice of the Kings,” Bob Miller opened the festivities, Eric Garcetti, Mayor, City of Los Angeles, got the rally off to a raucous start with a surprising conclusion to his remarks.

LOS ANGELES — Heading into the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty and right wing Justin Williams appeared to have put some distance between themselves and a small handful of teammates who were also in the conversation for the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded annually to the Most Valuable Player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But once the Kings won the 2014 Stanley Cup in Game 5 on defenseman Alec Martinez’ goal at 14:43 of the second overtime period, the choice was clear: the trophy had to go to veteran right wing Justin Williams.

Indeed, Williams was the best choice for the Conn Smythe Trophy, even though the Kings got outstanding performances from several players. But his play in the Stanley Cup Final, when he scored two goals and added five assists for seven points, with a +2 plus/minus rating and one game-winning goal, clinched the Conn Smythe Trophy, as he led all players in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final in scoring.
