Former LA Kings Grinder Ian Laperriere Still Dealing With Health Issues Three Years Later

LOS ANGELES — Over the 45-year history of the Los Angeles Kings, there have been a number of fan favorites, but only a very select few come to mind before one thinks of former Kings forward Ian Laperriere.

No, Laperriere was not the big goal scorer or the gifted playmaker. Rather, he was the grinder, the player who did the dirty work in the corners, made the big hit, and dropped the gloves to stand up for his teammates, time and time again.

Now retired as a player, Laperriere was in town last week, with his trip to the Los Angeles area culminating with the Kings honoring him on February 23, when they handed the Colorado Avalanche—one of Laperriere’s former teams—a 4-1 defeat at Staples Center.

LOS ANGELES — Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, Trevor Lewis and Anze Kopitar scored goals to lead the Los Angeles Kings to a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in a sell-out, matinee contest at Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 23.

Brown was unchecked in the slot, and scored on a one-timer from the left hashmark just 58 seconds into the game, setting the tone for the rest of the game, with the Avalanche often more than one step behind.

LOS ANGELES — Following the Los Angeles Kings’ third period collapse, resulting in a 3-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche in Denver on January 22, based on the reaction across the World Wide Web, one would think the sky is falling, Dustin Penner is back to being the worst player in the history of the game, and the Kings are doomed.

Of course, in an abbreviated season, every game counts that much more, and there is almost no time for a team to catch up if they dig themselves into a hole early in the season.
