LA Kings Darryl Sutter Talks Helicopters, Prophecies After Wednesday Practice

LA Kings defenseman Drew Doughty has been on the ice for more than his share of goals against this season, a fact that has not gone unnoticed.

EL SEGUNDO, CA — Despite returning from their five-game Grammy road trip with a losing 2-3-0 record, the mood was rather upbeat in the Los Angeles Kings’ dressing room following practice at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, California, on February 13.

The reason? Even though they were just 1-1 in the final two games of that road trip, the Kings played their best hockey of the season, which could give them the badly-needed push needed to propel them into the Western Conference playoff race.

“I thought, in the Detroit game [on February 10, a 3-2 loss], we actually played better [than at St. Louis on February 11, a 4-1 win],” said veteran defenseman Rob Scuderi. “We deserved those two points. Sometimes, that doesn’t happen, but it was a huge step in the right direction for our group of guys, trying to play the right way, given our game, playing with some desperation, and some passion.”

EL SEGUNDO, CA — Despite being acquired by the Los Angeles Kings just five days ago, defenseman Keaton Ellerby already seems like a Southern California native, at least a little bit, anyway.

“I went down for lunch in Hermosa [Beach] with [defenseman Jake] Muzzin and [right wing Jordan] Nolan, and then just waited around,” Ellerby said, describing what he did during the Kings’ day off on February 12. “I picked up some sushi last night, checked the beach out…”

Sounds a lot like what the locals might do on a day off, right? Not so fast, at least, not in this case, anyway.

“I toured around a little bit yesterday,” said Ellerby. “It’s going to take awhile to get used to everything, and all traffic, stuff like that.”

Ellerby started the day off getting some much needed extra rest.

“I kind of slept in,” said the 24-year-old, 6-5, 217-pound native of Strathmore, Alberta. “I came in, and did the whole tour of the [Kings practice] facility yesterday.”

After that, it was time to get the lay of the land…

I think we should use this game as a wake-up call. We got our asses
kicked. We’ve got to use that as motivation to be better.

LOS ANGELES — Although the Los Angeles Kings began their annual Grammy Awards road trip on February 2 (Staples Center is being prepared for Sunday’s Grammy Awards), a 7-4 loss at Anaheim, they did not actually leave Southern California until Monday morning headed, for their first stop in Columbus, Ohio, where they will skate against the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight (4:00 PM PST, Fox Sports West).

After tonight, the Kings will then play at Nashville, Detroit and St. Louis before a three-day hiatus in the schedule (February 12 – 14), before they host Columbus on February 15.
