LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Kings have struggled through much of the final month of 2011, losing five straight games from December 3 – 13, and winning just twice from December 1 – December 17.

Indeed, things have looked pretty bleak with an anemic offense, the worst in the National Hockey League. But, somehow, the Kings never dropped out of the picture in the Western Conference standings, and after handing the high-powered Vancouver Canucks a 4-1 drubbing at Staples Center in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve, they not only ended the year on a high note, but…hold onto your party hats…they now find themselves in sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division and third place in the Western Conference. Frozen Royalty Audio: LA Kings Finally Break Through 3-Goal Wall In 4-3 Win Over Phoenix

LOS ANGELES — It took them 15 games, but the Los Angeles Kings finally scored three goals in a game on Monday night, defeating the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-3, in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,118 fans at Staples Center.

The last time the Kings scored three goals (in regulation time or overtime, not in a shootout) in a game was on November 22, a 3-2 victory at St. Louis. From that point forward, until Monday night, the Kings never scored more than two regulation/overtime goals, earning a poor 5-7-2 record over that span, two of the wins the result of shootouts. LA Kings Find Bright Spots During Failed First Test Without Mitchell, Richards in 2-1 Loss To Montreal Canadiens

LOS ANGELES — One game into a stretch in which they will have to do without the services of center Mike Richards and defenseman Willie Mitchell, already, the Los Angeles Kings have shown that there are big reasons for concern after struggling mightily in a 2-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens during a matinee affair at Staples Center on December 3.

Tomas Plekanec gave the Canadiens a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 18:39 of the first period.

Andrei Kostitsyn finished off an odd-man rush at 10:48 of the second period, giving the Habs a 2-1 lead, taking advantage of Kings defenseman Matt Greene losing an edge and falling at the Montreal blue line, just inside right point.

The Kings cut the Canadiens’ lead in half at the 13:46 mark of the third period. But before you read on, be advised that California has not fallen into the Pacific Ocean, and you do not need to make sure that your affairs are in order.

Left wing Dustin Penner was the responsible party, scoring his first goal of the season, prompting concerns that some cataclysmic event was upon us.

But that was as close as the struggling Kings could get.

“I thought we had a good first twenty minutes,” said left wing Simon Gagne. “We had a lot of pucks on the net, a lot of shots. The second period, I thought, was not very good. We took a lot of bad penalties, and gave them chances to go on the power play. From that point, we found ourselves, down, 2-0.” Read more of this post

Frozen Royalty Audio: LA Kings Need Shootout To Get Past Ducks

LOS ANGELES — Despite dominating play in the first and second periods, the Los Angeles Kings could only get one shot past Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller in regulation play, on their way to a 2-1 shootout win over Anaheim in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,118 fans at Staples Center on November 16.

After outshooting the Ducks in the first period, 17-5, the Kings got on the scoreboard when center Mike Richards scored at 7:38 of the second period, while the Kings had a two-man advantage. Read more of this post

LOS ANGELES — Five different players scored goals in the first and second periods to lead the Los Angeles Kings to an easy 5-2 win over the Minnesota Wild in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,118 fans at Staples Center on November 12.
