Los Angeles Kings: Despite Poor Effort Against New Jersey, The Sky Is Not Falling

LOS ANGELES AND EL SEGUNDO, CA — The Los Angeles Kings put in a highly uninspired, sloppy performance (and that is putting it mildly) in an embarrassing 3-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils in front of a disappointed, and, in some cases, a bitter and angry crowd on October 25 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The embarrassing loss generated a perfect storm of sorts for some who claim that the sky is falling, and that head coach Terry Murray demonstrated gross incompetence and should be fired for giving Jonathan Bernier the start in goal, rather than the white hot Jonathan Quick, who was coming off his third straight shutout.

Yes, as unbelievable as it is, you read that right. Some are already calling for Murray’s head, despite the fact that the Kings are off to a solid 5-2-1 start.

Some are also placing the blame for loss to the Devils squarely on the shoulders of Bernier, saying that he played poorly. Read more of this post

Frozen Royalty Audio: Jonathan Quick Sets Two Team Records, Leads LA Kings To 1-0 Win Over Dallas Stars

LOS ANGELES — Jack Johnson fired a one-time knuckleball shot, beating screened Dallas Stars goaltender Andrew Raycroft at 15:02 of the third period to give the Los Angeles Kings a 1-0 victory in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,118 fans at Staples Center on October 22.

The goal was Johnson’s third of the season, and his third game-winning goal of the year. EL SEGUNDO, CA — After being the target of heavy criticism for his poor play and physical conditioning late last season after being acquired from the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings left wing Dustin Penner dedicated himself to improving his strength and conditioning during the off-season.

Even then, Penner had fans up in arms about his alleged poor conditioning after a photo appeared on Twitter back in August that “proved” he was badly out of shape.

The photo turned out to be totally misleading—an understatement of epic proportions, as Penner’s dramatically improved strength and conditioning had already been well-documented.

After all that, Penner was looking forward to getting off to a strong start, but you may know what author John Steinbeck wrote about the best laid plans…

Indeed, instead of starting off on the right foot in the Kings’ season opener against the New York Rangers in Stockholm, Sweden on October 7, and against the Buffalo Sabres on October 8 in Berlin, Germany, Penner was sidelined for those games by multiple injuries. Read more of this post

EL SEGUNDO AND LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Kings are off to the fast start they were hoping for, with a 3-1-1 record through their first five games of the season.

A big reason for that is that they are ranked 11th in the National Hockey League in goals scored, with an average of 2.80 goals-per game (GPG), through games played on October 19.

Last season, the Kings ended the season ranked 25th, scoring 209 goals, an average of 2.55 GPG. Read more of this post
