Frozen Royalty Audio and NHL Video: LA Kings Embarrass Blue Jackets, 6-0

LOS ANGELES — After two performances that could be characterized as stinkers, the Los Angeles Kings had a laugher on their hands for a change.

After right wing Wayne Simmonds scored his 15th goal of the season at the 5:49 mark of the first period, the Kings scored three goals in a 1:55 span, giving them a 4-0 lead in the first period and they never looked back, bombing the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets, 6-0, in front of an announced crowd of 17,524 fans at Staples Center on Monday night.

Alexander Frolov led the way for the Kings with a goal and three assists, while Drew Doughty, Michal Handzus, Fredrik Modin and Brad Richardson added goals.

After Simmonds opened the scoring, the Kings hit for those three quick goals starting with Doughty scoring one a onetime blast after finding himself all alone in the middle of the slot.

That blatant defensive breakdown by the Blue Jackets was just the tip of the iceberg for them, as they put in an embarrassing effort offensively and defensively.

Handzus and Frolov scored at 14:38 and 15:19, respectively, with both goals coming on the power play.

Modin gave the Kings a 5-0 lead with another power play goal at the 4:20 mark of the second period. Richardson closed out the scoring with his tenth goal of the season at the 9:45 mark.

Mercifully for the Blue Jackets, there was no further scoring.

So dominant were the Kings that the Blue Jackets recorded just three shots on goal in the first period and only two in the second period. None of them resulted in quality scoring opportunities.

Mostly due to four Kings penalties, the Blue Jackets recorded six shots on goal in the third period, but again, none came on dangerous scoring chances.

NOTES

  • Handzus recorded his 400th National Hockey League point and his 100th point with the Kings. He has twelve points in the last twelve games (five goals, seven assists for twelve points).
  • Goaltender Jonathan Quick earned his third shutout of the season and the seventh of his NHL career. He is now tied with Gary Edwards and Gerry Desjardins for seventh on the Kings all-time shutouts list.
  • The Kings’ three power play goals tie a season high.
  • Twelve of the eighteen Kings skaters recorded a point in the game.
  • The Kings improved to 25-0-0 when leading after two periods of play.
  • The Kings are 9-0-0 when Frolov has a multi-point night. His four points and three assists are a season-high this year.
  • The Kings tied a season high four goals in one period. Last time was November 5, 2009 vs. Pittsburgh.
  • Anze Kopitar extended his point streak to seven games (four goals, three assists for seven points) in that span. His career-high is eight games.
  • Prior to the game, the Kings announced that right wing Justin Williams, who suffered a broken right leg (near the ankle) on December 26, 2009 at Phoenix, has been cleared to participate in contact drills in practice.
