EL SEGUNDO, CA — On December 18, the Los Angeles Kings activated left wing Ryan Smyth from injured reserve and assigned forwards Corey Elkins, Oscar Moller and Scott Parse, along with defenseman Alec Martinez, to the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, the Kings’ primary minor league affiliate.

Smyth, 33, suffered an upper body injury (an educated guess is that it was a rib injury) on November 16 at Florida and has missed the last fifteen games.

In 33 games this season, the 6-2, 189-pound native of Banff, Alberta has scored nine goals and has added fourteen assists for 23 points.

Elkins, 24, was recalled on emergency basis on December 14, and made his National Hockey League debut at Edmonton on December 15. The 6-3, 216-pound native of West Bloomfield, Michigan scored his first NHL goal on December 17 at Calgary.

Moller, 20, has played in nine games with the Kings this season, scoring a goal and adding an assist. The 5-10, 186-pound native of Stockholm, Sweden was most recently recalled by the Kings on December 6.

Parse, 25, has scored four goals and has contributed seven assists for eleven points with twelve penalty minutes in 27 games with the Kings this season. The 5-11, 197-pound native of Portage, Michigan was recalled on October 23 after starting the season with the Monarchs.

Martinez, 22, played in thirteen games with the Monarchs this season after starting the year with the Kings. The 6-1, 208-pound native of Rochester Hills, Michigan scored three goals and added three assists for six points with Manchester. He was recalled on December 16.

Of those assigned to Manchester, Parse (and maybe Moller) is (are) expected to be recalled after the Kings’ current eight-day break in their schedule.

  1. So, does Parse and Moller actually get into any games in Manchester? There’s a game tonight and tomorrow only.

I know part of this has to do with reducing payroll during the 8-day break.

  2. Gann Matsuda says:

Elkins, Martinez, Moller and Parse very likely flew directly from Calgary to Manchester. In other words, it was all planned ahead of time.

Why does this mean it’s all about money? Seems more likely that they just want these guys playing as much as possible.
