Jeremy…doubtful that it would’ve made much difference because of the conditioning problem. Besides that, his behavior was entirely unprofessional in terms of what he was getting paid to do…play hockey and perform to the best of his abilities, which he did not even come close to doing.

Maybe the fact that the Kings sucked had something to do with it? They’ve only recently become worthy of watching. It’s hard to be motivated when you’re on a crap team in an even worse market. I can’t remember any other player from that team. In fact until I read this article I forgot he was even on that team. Roenick should have gone to ANY Canadian team, not LA. He would’ve been a legend up here. Hopefully he becomes a sportcaster. I love his straight talk.

Please send this to the Kings PR department. They think we’re stupid enough to want to hear from Roenick again. The fact that the Kings would associate with him after that abortion of a season filled with whining, excuses, terrible effort and insults to the fans reflects poorly on Luc and the entire team. Distance yourself from Roenick. We are not that stupid.

Great job as usual Gann….

You hit on the aspect that drove me nuts with Roenick: the lack of effort. He played with so much heart in his 3 stops BEFORE the lockout; then played like he didn’t care for his 50-something games with the Kings. Its one thing if the talent is gone, its another thing if the effort is gone….

I figured it was probably just age– but when he was with the Sharks I was reminded that he still was capable of TRYING and even showing a fair bit of leadership. Where the hell was that when he was a King? Exactly…

I don’t follow hockey at all and am only barely familiar with the hockey “greats,” but I was absolutely mesmerized by that profile—both the retirement event itself, then following the link to that “one black mark!” The “black mark” story made the whole Roenick profile that much more interesting! In fact, with the big stumble (all classic—and tragic—heroes have to stumble!), the story becomes that much more compelling. It would make a GREAT movie – and think of all the great actual hockey that they’d have to include to make it (the movie) more real! Thanks for the “inspired” read!

He should have been a good fit here. He could have made a positive difference in the media. It was incredibly frustrating and all on him and his behavior, but it’s hard not to notice that it was just another example of the Kings organization for so many years managing to bring in the wrong player at the wrong time.

Those Flyers fans obviously don’t follow the Kings or what he did and didn’t do while he was here. No reason for them to do so, but they clearly don’t know what they’re talking about if they’re saying he was anything positive with the Kings.

Although..i wasn’t a fan of Roenick when he was here, I do like him overall. His “protest” of the lock-out dragged him down alot of pegs in my book.

BUT, one great thing he did in L.A., there was a Canada trip where he stayed in L.A. with a fractured foot. The Kings had 2 forwards get hurt in the 1st game of the series…he jumped on a plane with with Jeff Cowan, who was also injured, and they went up and played injured until the relief from Manchester came.

Something that I will always remember. You definitely have to have some commitment to a team to hop a plane and risk further injury for.

My problem is that you didn’t write the article with enough malice. Roenick may have had a great career but he was terrible with Los Angeles. As a Kings fan I find it hard to get past that.

However, I do realize that, outside of Kings fans, that Jeremy Roenick is well-deserving of the accolades and respect that he gets from the hockey community. He just doesn’t get it from me.

After tuning into the NHL Network to watch the hour-long special on Roenick’s retirement press conference and hearing so many glow and gush about his career—as well they should—and after reading story after story that highlighted the positive aspects of Roenick’s outstanding NHL career, I couldn’t help myself. I had to strike a balance between all that and I hope I did that fairly in this op-ed piece. It was certainly written without malice towards Roenick.
