LA Kings And the 2009 NHL Entry Draft – Live Updates

EL SEGUNDO, CA — Frozen Royalty is live from the headquarters of the Los Angeles Kings at the Toyota Sports Center reporting on the first round of the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft that begins at 4:00 PM PDT.

Check back here frequently for what the Kings do in the first round. Also check in later this evening for a story on the first round with comments from Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi and, very likely, from their first round selection(s).

4:19 PM: As expected, the New York Islanders selected John Tavares with the first overall pick...

4:27 PM: Tampa Bay Lightning surprise no one by selecting Victor Hedman with the second overall pick…

4:38 PM: The Colorado Avalanche select Matt Duchene with the third overall pick…also not a surprise. And here’s where it gets interesting…will the Kings try to trade up to get the fourth overall pick?

4:46 PM: The Atlanta Thrashers selected Evander Kane with the fourth overall pick. No surprises so far in the first round. Kings are up next at fifth overall…

4:56 PM: The Kings held onto the fifth overall pick and selected Brayden Schenn…also not a surprise.

5:06 PM: I will provide more updates here if the Kings are involved or affected by any moves in Montreal during the remainder of the first round.

5:37 PM: We just got off the phone with Lombardi. A quick summary…he knew on Friday night that there was no way for him to move up to pick earlier than his fifth overall selection and that the offers he got to move down in the draft were way too low. In fact, the vast majority of the NHL general managers that have been interviewed on the draft telecast have pretty much said the same thing…that they are not hearing offers that are enticing enough for them to make a significant move. Lombardi is also trying to work a deal or two, perhaps to move up into the latter part of the first round or to obtain more picks in the second round…
