San Jose Sharks vs. Los Angeles Kings – Live Updates

Greetings from the Bob Miller Press Box at Staples Center where the Los Angeles Kings host the San Jose Sharks in the second game of a home-and-home series to open the 2008-09 season for the Kings.

In the opener of the series, the Sharks, a legitimate Stanley Cup contender, totally outclassed the youthful Kings in a 3-1 victory that was not as close as the score seems to indicate.

Tonight, in the Kings’ home opener, Kings head coach Terry Murray has tweaked his lineup a bit, inserting Brian Boyle at center. Left wing Patrick O’Sullivan also returns. Left wing Kyle Calder, defenseman Peter Harrold and right wing Brad Richardson are the healthy scratches.

For San Jose, forward Marcel Goc and defenseman Brad Lukowich are healthy scratches.

The officials…the referees are Mike Hassenfratz and Greg Kimmerly. The linesmen are Pierre Racicot and Jay Sharrers…

6:10 PM PDT: Starting in goal…for the Sharks, Brian Boucher. For the Kings, Jason LaBarbera…

6:29 PM: After a strong start, the game has turned in the Sharks’ favor, as the Kings have gotten careless with the puck and are turning it over in their own zone a lot…

6:44 PM: Scoreless after one period. The Kings dodged a hail of bullets in the period after repeatedly coughing up the puck…

7:12 PM: Kings look better to start the second period…they’ve cut way down on the turnovers and they are generating some sustained pressure in the San Jose zone…

7:19 PM: After the Kings had pretty much taken control of the period, the Sharks got a gift, courtesy of LaBarbera. Sharks left wing Lukas Kaspar took a pass in the right circle off the rush and beat LaBarbera with a wrist shot off the left (far) post. There was no screen…LaBarbera was just slow to react. The goal was Kaspar’s first of the season, assist to Patrick Marleau at 9:56…

7:23 PM: Kaspar went to the box for hooking at 10:41 and the Kings “scored” on the power play, but a Kings player was in the crease and the goal was immediately waived off…

7:33 PM: Kings winger Matt Moulson “scored,” but he turned his right foot and kicked the puck into the San Jose net. Video replay confirmed it…no goal…

7:41 PM: 1-0 San Jose after two periods. The second period was a much better period for the Kings and they would still be scoreless if not for a soft goal allowed by LaBarbera…

8:01 PM: Third period is underway. Kings defenseman Jack Johnson suffered an “upper extremity injury” in the first period and will not return tonight…

8:20 PM: Sharks defenseman Christian Erhoff is in the box for tripping at 14:16…this might be the Kings” last real chance to get on the scoreboard…

8:23 PM: And they didn’t do anything with the man advantage…

9:06 PM: The game ended as a 1-0 victory for the Sharks. More later in my game story, which will include post-game audio from the Kings’ dressing room from Matt Moulson, Patrick O’Sullivan, Jason LaBarbera and Terry Murray.
