Anaheim Ducks vs. Los Angeles Kings, 9/30/08 – Live Updates

LOS ANGELES — Greetings from the Bob Miller Press Box at Staples Center where tonight, the Los Angeles Kings host the Anaheim Ducks in pre-season action.

The big news, if you haven’t already heard, is that the Kings and Ducks finalized a deal just prior to game time that sent veteran defenseman Sean O’Donnell (yes, the former Kings defenseman) back to the Kings. For details, check out Los Angeles Kings Acquire Defenseman Sean O’Donnell.

There has been no word at this time about O’Donnell’s status for tonight’s game. In fact, the trade was announced so close to game time that the official roster still lists him as a member of the Ducks (healthy scratch).

Tonight’s officials…referees: Mike Leggo and Kelly Sutherland. The linesmen are Pierre Racicot and Lyle Seitz…

7:32 PM (Pacific time): Kings defenseman Jack Johnson is here in the press box, so he apparently is not playing tonight…

7:38 PM: We are underway, and just 57 seconds into the game, Ducks winger Travis Moen takes a holding penalty…

7:46 PM: O’Donnell is not playing tonight. He will meet with the media during the first intermission, so I will have audio with him here on the blog late tonight.

7:55 PM: Kings heavyweight prospect Kevin Westgarth just pounded Ducks defenseman Steve Montador at center ice. Fighting majors for both at 10:02…

7:58 PM: Kings winger prospect Matt Moulson scored his third goal of the pre-season from right crease, assisted by Wayne Simmonds and Drew Doughty at 10:57. 1-0 Kings…

8:12 PM: 1-0 Kings after one period. The Kings were the better team in the period, ever so slightly…

8:34 PM: Second period underway with the Kings on the power play…Moen got nailed for interference at 20:00 of the first period. The Ducks killed the penalty…

9:03 PM: Kings center prospect Andrei Loktionov got nailed for hooking at 10:33 and the Ducks capitalized immediately when Anaheim defenseman Kent Huskins scored on a bang-bang back door play from below the left circle. The Kings penalty-killers allowed a pass across the low slot and got burned. Huskins with the power play goal at 10:41, assisted by Ken Klee and Corey Perry…no chance for LaBarbera on the play.

9:10 PM: 1-1 after two periods. The Kings were definitely the better team in the period, generating considerably more quality scoring chances than the Ducks. But Hiller was strong in goal and the Ducks made their best scoring opportunity of the game count…

9:37 PM: Early in the period, Boyle went off for hooking at at 3:54, followed by defenseman Denis Gauthier for tripping at 4:34, giving the Ducks a two-man advantage for 1:20. The Kings were solid on the penalty-kill and killed off both penalties…

9:50 PM: Kings right wing Dustin Brown and Ducks forward Corey Perry just collided at the Ducks blue line. Both were slow to get up and they went to their respective benches, but did not go to their dressing rooms.

10:01 PM:1-1 after regulation time. Anaheim was the better team in the third period, spending most of the period in the Kings’ zone. Overtime coming up…

10:13 PM: No scoring in overtime. Both teams had brief power plays.

In the shootout, Ducks forward Chris Kunitz scored the only goal, giving the Ducks a 2-1 win.
