Phoenix Coyotes vs. Los Angeles Kings, 9/22/08 – Live Updates

Greetings from the Bob Miller Press Box at Staples Center where the Los Angeles Kings host the Phoenix Coyotes in pre-season action tonight (7:30 PM PDT).

Frozen Royalty will be live blogging throughout the game to bring you the latest updates, just as I did here last season (starting in late January).

The players just skated onto the ice for pre-game warm-ups…nothing newsworthy to report yet.

As for the first game in tonight’s split-squad “doubleheader” in Kansas City, the Kings are leading the St. Louis Blues after two periods, 1-0. Defenseman prospect Davis Drewiske scored a shorthanded goal at 1:01 of the second period, assisted by Tom Preissing and Jarret Stoll.

Jonathan Quick got the start in goal. Jeff Zatkoff came on in the second period and is slated to finish the game. Chris Mason got the start in goal for the Blues with Marek Schwarz coming on in relief in the second period…

Start of the third period in Kansas City…the Kings have scored early to take a 2-0 lead on a goal by right wing prospect Wayne Simmonds…

7:09 PM: Jason LaBarbera will get the start in goal for the Kings tonight and prospect Daniel Taylor will also see action in goal tonight. Josh Tordjman is the expected starter in goal for the Coyotes…

7:17 PM: Over in Kansas City, Simmonds’ goal was from Preissing and Teddy Purcell at 4:30…

7:24 PM: Blues left wing Paul Kariya scored on the power play, assisted by David Perron at 14:50…

7:29 PM: Final in Kansas City: Kings hold on to beat the Blues, 2-1…

7:33 PM: The officials for tonight are: Referees: Mike Leggo, Rob Schick; Linesmen: Ryan Galloway, Andy McElman. Notables playing for the Kings tonight…Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar, Jack Johnson, Thomas Hickey, Oscar Moller, Brian Boyle and Vjateslav Voinov…

7:38 PM: Starting for the Kings, Denis Gauthier and Voinov will be paired on defense. Derek Armstrong will center Kyle Calder and Brady Murray…

7:40 PM: We are underway!

7:44 PM: Just like that, it’s 1-0 Phoenix after Kings forward Scott Parse took a hooking penalty at 1:15. On the scoring play, Turris took a pass across the low slot and from below the left circle, he got off a relatively weak wrist shot off the pass. But LaBarbera was slow to move across, giving Turris the entire net to shoot at, the goal scored at 1:47 from Kevin Porter and Steven Reinprecht. Not long after that, Kings’ pest Richard Clune went at it with Phoenix tough guy Todd Fedoruk. The fight was a draw…

7:56 PM: Coyotes prospect Adam Keefe received a double minor for roughing, giving the Kings a four-minute power play…the Kings’ first power play unit features Kopitar centering Parse and Brown with Johnson and Peter Harrold on the blue line. The second unit has David Meckler out with Boyle and Moller and as the second two minutes was about to end, Boyle got the puck below the right circle and threw a centering pass to Meckler, who was parked in the low slot. He got off a quick shot to beat Tordjman low, over his right leg pad. 1-1…

8:01 PM: Kings center Derek Armstrong takes a lead pass with a step on the defense. Off the rush, he took a wrist shot from the right side of the low slot that was stopped by Tordjman. But the rebound went back to Armstrong and with the puck still in mid-air, he batted it into the right side of the net, the goal coming at 10:41 from Moller and Raitis Ivanans. 2-1 Kings…

8:03 PM: Keefe just picked the wrong guy to drop the gloves with. He went at it with Ivanans, who just brutalized him, leaving Keefe’s face a bit bloodied…

8:15 PM: 2-1 Kings after one. After Phoenix opened the scoring, the Kings dominated play, both in terms of puck possession, but also sustained pressure in the attacking zone. The Kings also look MUCH BETTER defensively, especially in terms of positioning, than at any time last season. Of course, it is only a pre-season game…

8:37 PM: With Coyotes defenseman Jonas Ahnelov in the box for tripping at 0:34 of the second period, Boyle took a feed in the low slot with his back to the net. He spun to his right and lifted a wrist shot over Tordjman’s left shoulder. Boyle’s power play goal came at 2:08 from Moller and Voinov. And right after the goal, Moller took a double minor for high sticking at 2:40…

8:42 PM: Reinprecht got a nice feed across the high slot to beat LaBarbera from the left circle for a power play goal at 4:42 from Keith Yandle and Viktor Tikhonov. Right after that, the Coyotes were buzzing in the Kings’ zone and from just outside left crease, Garth Murray scored at 5:42 from Chad Kolarik and Adam Keefe. Kings did not look good after giving up the power play goal…

8:44 PM: The Kings found their composure on the next shift and Armstrong scored on a little wrist shot from the left circle that deflected in off the skate of a Coyotes’ defenseman in front. Assists to Denis Gauthier and Kyle Calder at 7:18. 4-3 Kings…

8:49 PM: Al Montoya is now in goal for Phoenix at 10:41 of the second period…

8:56 PM: LaBarbera just got beaten by Yandle at 16:02…a blast from just outside the blue line at left point…a really horrid goal for any goalie to allow…4-4…

9:01 PM: 4-4 after two periods. The Kings got a bit sloppy after a strong first period but if LaBarbera was on his game, they would likely be leading, 4-2. That said, the Coyotes looked better in the second period compared to their first-period performance…

9:20 PM: Daniel Taylor starts the third period in goal for the Kings…

9:42 PM: At the 16:30 mark, the Coyotes have been much better than the Kings in this period—the Kings have generated few quality scoring chances. But the score remains 4-4…

9:46 PM: with Coyotes forward Brett MacLean in the box for hooking at 17:10, there was a scramble for a loose puck in front, The puck trickled to right crease where Moeller got it and backhanded it into the open right side of the net. Kings win it. They may have scored an empty-netter right at the horn, but I can’t stick around up here to tell you…. More later.

10:15 PM: A quick update from the Chick Hearn Media Room…Meckler scored the empty-net goal at 19:59. 6-4 Kings. I will have a brief recap and post-game audio interviews later…
