Where Are They Now: Dan Bylsma
August 6, 2008 10 Comments
Here’s one from the “Where Are They Now?” department…
On August 4, former Los Angeles Kings’ grinding winger Dan Bylsma was named head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, the primary minor league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“Dan is one of the brightest young coaches in the American Hockey League, and is more than ready to take on the role of guiding the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins,” said Pittsburgh Penguins Assistant General Manager Cliff Fletcher. “He has already helped in the development of several players who have made an impact in Pittsburgh, and his two years behind the bench in Wilkes-Barre give him a unique knowledge of our top prospects.”
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to continue my coaching career with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins,” said Bylsma. “It’s been a goal of mine to become a head coach in the American Hockey League, and I can’t think of a better place to have that goal come to fruition.”

always liked bylsma, not the most gifted player (understatement), but he always gave it his all.
Byyyylllllssssmmmmaaaaa!!!!!! Great name. Will be remembered (unfairly) for falling down on a breakaway with Gretzky. That’s lame. I agree pucknfuss, always gave it his all.
When I saw that, I thought, “do I laugh or just shake my head in disgust? He was in open ice with no one near him and fell at the blue line. It wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t The Great One feeding him the puck…
He wasn’t the greatest player but he sure had heart. As bad as that was, he played better than many guys who were supposed to be superstars (Aki Berg cough cough)…
Great to see your blog Gann. I haven’t been around too much since the days of the “list”. I’m sure I’ll be a regular reader.
shooten…Scott?
Yep. I used my personal email instead of the Qualcomm address.
Wow…long time no…nothing! You are aware, aren’t you, that my work has always been available on the Online Kingdom since way before the last of the e-mail lists was shut down, right?
I got so busy with career and family that I didn’t follow much of anything except watching the games. Now that my 12 year old daughter is a big King’s fan, I’m getting back. We made the trip from San Diego a few times this year for the first time in a while. Anyway, I really like the blog. I hope we have a better year than last.
Family? Career? C’mon man…get your priorities straight! :-)
Don’t count on the Kings being better in the coming season. Looks like things are going to get worse before they get better. The saving grace is that they’re FINALLY rebuilding instead of just saying they are.
I have always liked Dan Bylsma. He was a great penalty-killer and seemed to have the same qualities that Lombardi values so highly now. Character, hard work, etc…
Also, that is a weird coincidence that the Penguins have an assistant GM that is also named Cliff Fletcher.
