San Jose Sharks vs. Los Angeles Kings: In-Game Updates
April 4, 2008 Leave a Comment
LOS ANGELES — Greetings once again from the Bob Miller Press Box at Staples Center, where the Los Angeles Kings will host the San Jose Sharks at 7:30 PM PDT (televised in the Los Angeles area on FSN West).
Starting goaltenders will be Evgeni Nabokov for the Sharks (contrary to reports out of San Jose that Brian Boucher would get the start) and Erik Ersberg for the Kings.
The referees will be Mike Leggo and Wes McCauley. The linesmen will be Mike Cvik and Ryan Galloway…
Tonight’s scratches…for San Jose: Jonathan Cheechoo, Christian Erhoff, Marcel Goc, Devin Setoguchi, Sandis Ozolinsh, Tomas Plihal, Craig Rivet. For Los Angeles: Kyle Calder, Dan Cloutier, Jack Johnson, Jason LaBarbera…
Right off the opening face-off, the Sharks got the puck in the Kings’ zone and dominated. They got the puck to the front of the net and Joe Thornton scored an easy one for his 29th goal of the season, coming just 36 seconds into the game. Assisted by Tom Cavanagh and Jeremy Roenick…
At the 6:05 mark, it’s still 1-0 Sharks. They have outshot the Kings so far, 6-1…
At the 8:55 mark, the Kings got four shots on a power play after Sharks winger Curtis Brown went off for roughing at 8:38, but they could not score…
16:07 mark…shots are now even at nine for each team, but the Sharks have had the much higher quality scoring chances…play has not been as even as the numbers might make it seem…
1-0 Sharks after one period. The Kings came on a bit near the end of the period, but the Sharks were still the better team in the first. Shots ended up 13-9 in the Kings’ favor…
Second period is underway. On what started rather innocently, winger Brian Willsie found himself in the slot with the puck, all alone for a second. He got off a somewhat weak wrist shot through traffic that trickled past Nabokov to tie the game. Assist to Michael Cammalleri at 2:14…
Raitis Ivanans scored his sixth goal of the season at the 10:29 mark after two great shifts by the Kings in the San Jose zone. The Kings had the Sharks bottled up in their own zone in a big way and were dominating the suddenly vulnerable Sharks. Assists on the goal go to Alexander Frolov and Derek Armstrong. 2-1 Kings…
2-1 Kings after two periods. Kings outshot the Sharks in the period, 10-7. A poor period by the Sharks, who shifted into low gear after the first period, apparently. Give the Kings credit for capitalizing, but it was mostly the Sharks not coming out of the dressing room with a full head of steam that gave the Kings their opporunities…
The third period is underway and the world as we know it has righted itself again…The Sharks got an early power play and made quick work of the Kings’ penalty-killers as Joe Pavelski scored his 19th goal of the season, assisted by Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton at 3:03…
At the 10:45 mark, it’s still 2-2. The Sharks have returned to their first period form, which means trouble for the Kings…
Kings get a bounce going their way for a change…Kopitar scores his 31st goal of the season after a puck deflected off a San Jose skate in front. Assists to Dustin Brown and Scott Thornton at 14:22…
Kopitar scores an empty-net goal at the 19:56 mark. Kings win it, 4-2. More in my game story on Friday.
