LOS ANGELES — Ryan Getzlaf scored at 14:28 of the third period to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in front of 11,107 fans at Staples Center on Saturday night.
The game was the second of the 2007-08 pre-season for both clubs.
Jason King and Andrew Miller also scored for the Ducks. Michael Cammalleri and Tom Preissing scored for the Kings.
Miller got the Ducks off to a quick start, picking up his own rebound in the lower right circle and beating Kings goaltender Jason LaBarbera high, just inside the right goal post, at 1:10 of the first period.
The Ducks dominated the early going, outshooting the Kings 7-2 just past the midway point of the period.
Cammalleri got the Kings on the board at 14:10 on the power play, lifting the puck over Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller from right crease after Hiller stopped Cammalleri’s first attempt from the bottom of the right circle.
The Kings picked up their game in the second period, but got sloppy in their own end while on the power play, giving King a shorthanded breakaway goal at 9:09.
But Preissing answered quickly, blasting a one-timer from the top of the slot past Hiller at 9:36.
The teams played a fairly even third period, until Getzlaf got the puck in the left circle with three players in front of Kings goalie prospect Jonathan Bernier. Getzlaf fired a high wrist shot from the left face-off dot, beating Bernier top shelf, left corner of the net for the game-winner.
On that play, Bernier was hopelessly screened.
“I just couldn’t see anything,” said the 19-year-old netminder. “[Ducks forward Corey Perry] went in front of me at the right time. I think it was a set play. I just couldn’t see the shot.”
“It’s just too bad at the end,” added Bernier. “It was tied, and they scored like that. But overall, it was a pretty good game.”
No one could blame Bernier for allowing that goal. He was very solid and actually made it look easy in the Kings net.
